German outlet TZ reported on May 20 (Korean time) that Ito may leave Munich two years after his arrival and is being linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund.
The Japanese defender is comfortable playing both center back and left back. A left-footer, he offers ball-playing ability from the back while standing out for his one-on-one defending and interception skills.
Ito joined Stuttgart on loan in June 2021, made the transfer permanent in May 2022, and featured in 30 Bundesliga matches in 2022-23, establishing himself as a key member of their defense.
His performances contributed to Stuttgart’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League in 2023-24, which helped pave the way for his move to Bayern ahead of last season.
But injuries have disrupted his time in Munich. Roughly six weeks after arriving, he broke a metatarsal and required surgery. While rehabbing in October 2024, persistent pain forced a second operation.
This season Ito split time between left back and center back but managed just 22 appearances due to recurring fitness issues. He also dropped behind Kim Min-jae in the center-back pecking order and failed to secure a regular starting role.
Reports now indicate he could be on the move this summer. TZ suggests Ito’s time at Bayern may be winding down and that the club would be willing to sell should a satisfactory offer arrive.
Ito is reportedly open to a transfer. The outlet adds he is currently behind Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae for minutes. Several English Premier League clubs — including Brighton, Leeds United and West Ham — have been linked with him, and Borussia Dortmund are said to be monitoring the situation as they look to strengthen their defense.
