[MyDaily = Reporter Kim Jong-guk] Pep Guardiola appears poised to leave Manchester City.
On the 20th, the BBC reported that Guardiola said he will make a decision after consulting the club’s executives, while Vincent Kompany has emerged as the leading candidate to replace him.
Guardiola said, “I have one year left on my contract, but from long conversations and my experience, any announcement during the season tends to have negative consequences. The first person I need to speak with is the chairman of Manchester City. We agreed to discuss it after the season and then make a decision.” City drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on the 20th in a 2025–26 Premier League match, effectively ending their title hopes this season. That result has increased speculation that Guardiola will depart after the campaign.
German outlets such as Abendzeitung reported on the 20th that Bayern Munich fans are watching Kompany with growing unease. News that Guardiola could leave City after a decade shocked supporters and has raised concerns at Bayern centered on Kompany. Kompany has long been viewed as the most likely candidate to succeed Guardiola. He is a club legend at City, having played there from 2008 to 2019, won four Premier League titles and served for many years as team captain. Guardiola has even said publicly that Kompany could one day manage Manchester City.
The reports also cited worried fans urging Bayern not to be complacent. “If City really pursue Kompany, everything falls apart,” one fan wrote, suggesting Kompany would be a short-term fix at Bayern until the City job opened, rather than part of a long-term project.
Bayern extended Kompany’s contract this season through 2029. TalkSPORT and other British outlets reported on the 20th that City attempted to lure Kompany back as Guardiola’s successor, but Kompany turned down the offer. He has shown a firm commitment to Bayern’s long-term project and is not considering leaving the club.
