“A player loved by teammates”… Set for fourth straight World Cup
Group opener vs. Morocco on June 14
Neymar, who plays for Santos, defied expectations by earning a spot on Brazil’s final 26-man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti unveiled the squad on the 19th (Korean time) at Museu do Amanhã in Rio de Janeiro. Among a galaxy of stars, Neymar drew the most attention — the crowd erupted when his name was announced.
The selection came as a surprise to many. Neymar is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, but he suffered a left ACL and meniscus tear in October 2023 during World Cup qualifying, underwent surgery and has yet to return to his previous level. Since taking charge in May last year, Ancelotti had not called him up.
Many local pundits expected Neymar to miss the cut. Instead, he made the squad and will appear at his fourth consecutive World Cup, having represented Brazil in 2014 (host), 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar). Ancelotti said, “Neymar can improve his fitness before our opening match. He will be an important player in this tournament. He has extensive big‑tournament experience and is loved by his teammates.”
Brazil will assemble at the national team training center in Teresópolis on the 27th. The Seleção opens Group C against Morocco on June 14, faces Haiti on June 20 and closes group play against Scotland on June 25.
