Injury Crisis: Will Lee Jung-hoo and Willie Adames Miss Upcoming Games?

[SPOTV News = Seung-hwan Park] The San Francisco Giants had a brutal night in Phoenix — a lopsided loss compounded by multiple injuries to key players.

The Giants fell 2-12 on May 19 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, losing on the road to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

There were bigger concerns than the score. The first problem involved Lee Jung-hoo. He failed to produce much against Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen in his first plate appearance, but in his second he lined a hit to right field for his fifth straight game with a hit.

Before the bottom of the fourth, Lee was unexpectedly lifted for defensive replacement Will Brennan. Shania Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle and Justice de los Santos of the Mercury News reported Lee exited the game with what appeared to be a lower-back cramp.

The bad news kept coming. The second setback came when starter Robbie Ray was forced out. Ray had already surrendered a first-inning grand slam and had allowed seven runs before the fifth inning. More runs followed in the bottom of the fifth.

Ray gave up a leadoff single to Aldemaro Vargas and then a two-run homer to Gabriel Moreno. After allowing a hit and a stolen base to José Fernández, Ray induced a ground ball from Tim Tawa — but the ball struck Ray at 99.5 mph (about 160.1 km/h), and the Giants removed him from the game.

That was only the beginning. With San Francisco trailing 2-12 in the bottom of the fifth, Nolan Arenado ripped a grounder toward the shortstop at 96.8 mph (about 155.8 km/h). The ball ricocheted off Willy Adames’ right hand and rolled away. Adames, who carries an approximate 182 million USD (approximately 274.1 billion KRW) valuation, immediately shook his hand and shook his head in obvious discomfort.

Adames was replaced by a pinch-hitter before the top of the sixth. Losing three regulars in one game — Lee, Ray (for the night), and Adames — made an already painful loss even worse for the Giants.

And their statuses don’t look great. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that Lee Jung-hoo is not expected to play Tuesday (the 20th). Nightengale added that Adames has a bruised thumb and is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game.

There was one bright spot: Nightengale said the team still plans for Ray to make his next scheduled start.
