By Noh Chan-hyuk, MyDaily—Kobi Mainoo celebrated his new contract in dramatic fashion, scoring the winner against Liverpool, then offered comments that many took as a thinly veiled shot at sacked manager Ruben Amorim.
On May 3 (Korean time), Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford in the 35th round of the 2025-2026 English Premier League. Mainoo delivered the decisive strike.
United jumped in front in the 6th minute through Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead in the 14th, leaving the hosts comfortably 2-0 at the break.
Yet Liverpool responded early in the second half. Dominic Szoboszlai pulled one back two minutes after the restart, and a costly build-up error by United’s goalkeeper allowed Cody Gakpo to draw Liverpool level in the 11th minute of the second half.

When the game hung in the balance, Mainoo stepped up. In the 32nd minute of the second half, Luke Shaw’s cross met Ahmad Diallo’s header, the ball deflected off a defender, and Mainoo reacted instantly with a one-touch finish to beat the keeper.
The goal proved to be the winner, and United completed a landmark league double over Liverpool for the first time in 10 years. The victory put United on 64 points and secured a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League group stage.
After the final whistle, Mainoo heaped praise on interim coach Michael Carrick in comments that many interpreted as a dig at Amorim. “Michael Carrick has done an incredible job of giving the players confidence. The players follow him, fight for him, and would be willing to die for him on the pitch,” Mainoo said.

UK outlet Cut Offside reported that many readers interpreted Mainoo’s remarks as reflecting the fractured relationship between Amorim and the squad that reportedly contributed to the manager’s January dismissal.
Under Amorim, Mainoo was largely sidelined and at one point was considered surplus to requirements, even weighing a loan move. After Carrick’s arrival, Mainoo has staged a revival — capped by a new 5-year contract.
