[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] South Korea’s U17 women’s national team opened the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup with a commanding win.
Coached by Lee Da-young, South Korea beat the Philippines 5-0 in Group C’s opener in Suzhou, China, on May 2.
South Korea struck early. In the 6th minute, Park Na-young’s long pass found Jang Ye-jin, whose shot came off the goalkeeper; Baek Seo-young was alert to the rebound and tapped in to give Korea the lead.
Building on that momentum, Korea doubled the lead quickly. In the 14th minute, a free kick deflected off a defender and Baek finished the loose ball to make it 2-0.
Baek completed a first-half hat trick. In the 34th minute, Im Ji-hye’s cross into the box wasn’t cleared by the defense, and Baek hammered the chance home for her third.
Leading 3-0 at the break, South Korea continued to press after halftime. In the 10th minute of the second half, Im Ji-hye struck after receiving a pass from Kim Min-seo, her shot hit the post, and Baek followed up to convert and make it four.
The win was sealed when Kim Hee-na added an insurance goal in the 22nd minute of the second half, and South Korea cruised to a 5-0 victory.
South Korea will face Chinese Taipei in their second group match on May 4.
