[SPOTV News=Reporter Choi Sin-ae] KBS has finalized a deal to secure South Korea’s broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held across North and Central America.
On April 20, KBS announced it accepted JTBC’s final offer. The network acknowledged the agreement could result in a substantial financial shortfall but said the decision was made to uphold its obligations as a public broadcaster.
KBS added that, after pushing to protect the value of license fees, it was able to reach a dramatic agreement.
With the tournament barely a month away, KBS is rushing preparations. The network plans to dispatch its commentary team, led by analyst Lee Young-pyo, to the host region and has quickly moved to add Jeon Hyun-moo to the broadcast lineup.
Song Jae-hyuk, head of the KBS Sports Center, noted that World Cup coverage normally requires about a year of preparation, so time is tight. Still, he said KBS will draw on its extensive broadcast experience to deliver high-quality coverage to viewers.
