Riding the momentum from a ‘Leessangrok’ victory after 2,756 days, ‘JD’ Jaedong swept top seed Kim Taek-yong to establish himself as the clear favorite in Group C.
On the evening of the 20th, FreakUp Studio in Gangnam, Seoul hosted Day 3 of the Google Play ASL Season 21 Round-of-16 dual-tournament, Group C. In the winners’ match — featuring ‘Bisu’ Kim Taek-yong, ‘Amp’ Kim Tae-young, ‘JD’ Jaedong and ‘Flash’ Lee Young-ho — Jaedong defeated Kim Taek-yong 2–0 in sets.
In Game 1 on the Jane Doe map, Jaedong started at 8 o’clock while Kim was at 1 o’clock. When Kim’s probe came to scout, Jaedong sent zerglings to disrupt it. After Kim posted a Zealot at the hill entrance, Jaedong followed with hydralisks and lurkers, quickly punched through the defenses, raided Kim’s base, destroyed cannons and defensive structures, and took the first set in just 5 minutes, 36 seconds.
The match moved to a Knockout map for Game 2, with Jaedong at 7 o’clock and Kim at 5 o’clock. Jaedong expanded rapidly to a triple and hunted down Kim’s persistent scouting probe, destroying it. He then sent a mutalisk-and-scourge strike to the front yard, but Kim used Corsairs to defend, knocking out the scourges and even taking down an Overlord.
After thinning out Kim’s Corsair count, Jaedong built up his mutalisk force. He baited the Dragoons with air units, then surrounded Kim’s main with hydralisks, launching a ground assault while simultaneously targeting Kim’s triple expansion. Kim tried to hold with Dragoons and Dark Templars and counterattacked with Zealots, but with his economy cut off he couldn’t sustain the defense. Jaedong kept up relentless pressure with successive hydralisks; Kim surrendered at 20 minutes, 7 seconds, sending Jaedong into the quarterfinals as Group C’s top seed.
