By Sang-pil Lee, Sports Today — Suwon FC Women delivered a landmark performance on the Asian stage that will stand in the club’s history.
Suwon booked a place in the AFC Women’s Champions League (AWCL) semifinals with a commanding 4-0 victory over Wuhan Jiangda WFC in a one-off quarterfinal in Wuhan, China, on March 29.
Facing a heavily pro-Wuhan crowd, Suwon kept its composure and executed a disciplined game plan. The result was even more significant because it came against the defending AWCL champions. With the win, Suwon FC Women reached the AWCL semifinals for the first time in club history.
Suwon set the tone early. Ji So-yeon opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and Haruhi doubled the lead in the 35th to send Suwon into halftime up 2-0. Just after the break, Kim Hye-ri added a third in the 48th minute to put the game out of reach. Wuhan pushed back with heavy pressure, but Suwon’s back line and goalkeeper Kim Kyung-hee held firm. In stoppage time, Jeon Min-ji finished a cross from Kwon Eun-som to seal the 4-0 win.
After the match, manager Park Gil-young credited the fans who traveled from Korea for fueling the team’s performance. “We drew extra energy from the fans who came to support us,” Park said. “We’ll prepare even more thoroughly for the semifinals and give the fans a great performance.” Player of the Match Kwon Eun-som added, “I’m thrilled. The players came together, our preparation paid off, and we showed it on the field.”
The victory sets up a semifinal rematch against Naegohyang WFC on May 20. With the semis and final likely to be staged in Suwon, a home showdown offers Suwon a chance to avenge its group-stage loss — a compelling subplot heading into the knockout rounds.
Riding this momentum, Suwon FC Women plan to carry the form into their WK League home opener against Seoul City on April 4 at 2 p.m. at Suwon Sports Complex.
