Yoon Ye-jin Shines with 10 Goals: How She Led SK Sugar Gliders to a Perfect Start in the H-League

Daniel Kim Views

Yoon Ye-jin of the SK Sugar Gliders showcased her most impressive performance since transferring, helping her team complete a perfect first-round sweep.

On February 7, at the SK Hawks Arena in Cheongju, Yoon scored 10 goals in the final match of the Shinhan SOL Bank 25-26 Handball H League women’s division first round against Incheon City Hall, earning her the game’s MVP honors. The team secured a dominant 37-24 victory.

With this win, the SK Sugar Gliders cemented their position atop the standings with a perfect 7-0 record (14 points). Yoon, who transferred from Seoul City Hall before this season, proved her worth with a stellar 10-goal performance, validating the team’s decision to acquire her.

Yoon’s impact went beyond just scoring. Her quick transitions and aggressive drives kept the opposing defense off-balance, while her lightning-fast court coverage on fast breaks consistently capped off offensive plays.

At the conclusion of the first round, Yoon ranks tied for 12th in scoring with 31 goals. She leads the league with 17 fast break goals, her specialty, and sits fourth in wing scoring with 9 goals. Yoon has quickly become a perfect fit for the team’s up-tempo style.

Reflecting on the season, Yoon expressed satisfaction with the results. Despite initial concerns about team chemistry following her transfer, she’s pleased with how the first round unfolded, even if there’s still room for improvement.

She described the team’s chemistry as an ongoing process of collective adjustment rather than relying on specific player combinations. While acknowledging they’re still developing, the team’s efforts to understand each other’s movements have fostered overall stability.

A standout aspect of Yoon’s game has been her increased involvement in fast breaks. She humbly attributed this to her teammates, saying, “Our tall defenders are so successful that it creates more opportunities for me.”

As the defense solidified, the team’s pace naturally quickened, further defining Yoon’s role. She views her extensive playing time positively, embracing the physical demands of frequent fast breaks as part of her responsibilities. Yoon emphasized her commitment to consistent conditioning and training to meet these challenges.

Since joining SK, Yoon has focused on adapting to the team’s style. Recognizing each team’s unique identity, she prioritizes blending into SK’s speed and flow over showcasing individual skills.

“Every team has its own style, so adapting to SK’s approach is my top priority. My teammates are incredibly skilled and fast, so I’m pushing myself in stamina and speed training to keep pace with them.”

Now in her eighth pro season, Yoon sees this year as a potential turning point. She’s driven by the fact that she’s yet to reach the championship finals.

“In my eight-year career, I’ve never made it to the championship finals. This season, my goal is not just to reach the finals, but to hoist the championship trophy.”

Yoon’s evolution – combining her speed, consistent effort, and dedication to team integration – is fueling SK Sugar Gliders’ momentum. As the team completes an undefeated first round, Yoon remains focused on continued growth, viewing herself as a work in progress rather than a finished product.
