Canadian figure skater Madeline Schizas has become an internet sensation after missing a college assignment deadline while focusing on her Olympic performance.
NBC Olympics reported on February 9 that Schizas inadvertently mixed up the due date for her sociology class assignment during the Milano Winter Olympics.
In an email to her professor, Schizas explained, “I got so caught up in the Olympic whirlwind that I misread the deadline,” and requested an extension.
She added, “I competed in the Olympics yesterday and am still in the midst of the competition.”
To back up her claim, Schizas included a link to the official press release from the Canadian Olympic Committee.
After sending the email, Schizas shared a screenshot on her Instagram story, which quickly went viral.

was supportive, stating, “Given these exceptional circumstances, an extension is absolutely no problem. Focus on your competition now, and submit the assignment when you’re done.”
He added, “The entire country is rooting for you and your team.”
McMaster University also confirmed the approval of the assignment extension through its official Instagram account.
This marks Schizas’ second Olympic appearance, following her debut at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
In the women’s singles short program, she delivered a Lion King-inspired performance that secured her sixth place.
Schizas is set to compete again in the women’s singles short program on the 17th, with medal contenders to be determined on the 19th.
Off the ice, Schizas is pursuing a degree in Human Behavior at McMaster University and plans to resume her studies after the Olympics.
