A man in his 30s was handed a lengthy prison term after fatally bludgeoning his maternal grandmother with a blunt instrument.
On April 2, the judiciary reported that Criminal Division 1 of the Cheongju District Court’s Chungju branch, presided over by Judge Bin Tae-uk, sentenced 38-year-old A to 15 years in prison on a charge of killing a direct family member. The court also ordered him to wear an electronic location-tracking device for 10 years.
Prosecutors say A attacked his 89-year-old maternal grandmother, identified as B, with a blunt instrument at about 6 p.m. on Dec. 25 at an apartment in Gyo-hyeon-dong, Chungju.
Investigators say he left B’s body at the scene for a day and later turned himself in after his parents, who had come to the apartment, persuaded him to contact police.
A’s parents, who lived separately from him and B, visited the residence the next day when they were unable to reach either of them.
Police say he told investigators he committed the crime because his grandmother’s persistent scolding had intensified.
Court records indicate that after a drug conviction more than a decade ago, he became estranged from his family, struggled to maintain steady employment, and was diagnosed with mental health issues, including bipolar disorder.
