Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of the People Power Party, criticized President Lee Jae-myung’s handling of the government’s investigation into the attack on the HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the 27th, Jang wrote on social media that Iran had been confirmed to have attacked the ship with missiles. He recalled Lee’s boastful line—”Mess with Koreans and you’ll be ruined”—and asked, “So what are you going to do now?”
He criticized the administration’s response as insufficient, asking, “What good will summoning the Iranian ambassador do? Lee is just standing by and watching.”
Jang also referenced calls to arrest Prime Minister Netanyahu over the detention of a Korean activist and pointed out that the HMM Namu had been struck twice by missiles, yet the president had remained silent.
He added, “You said Iran and North Korea are close—do they have some kind of leverage?” and asked, “Is he the president of the Republic of Korea or a Palestinian liberation activist? You can’t hold both roles.”
Earlier this month, the government said two unidentified aerial objects that struck the HMM Namu near the Strait of Hormuz were likely Noor-series anti-ship missiles developed in Iran.
Foreign Ministry First Vice Minister Park Yun-ju released the investigation findings and said the government would summon Iran’s ambassador to explain the results, demand responsible measures including steps to prevent a recurrence, and seek an apology.
