Translation result.U.S., allies coordinate — discussions on Korean Peninsula peace and U.S.-bound investmentPresident Lee Jae‑myung spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump on the 17th to discuss bilateral issues, including steps to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and plans for investment in the United States. The direct exchange between the two leaders came roughly seven months after their last in-person meeting at the APEC summit in Gyeongju in October.President Trump also phoned Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi shortly after the U.S.-China summit, the Blue House (South Korea’s presidential office) said. According to the Blue House, the two presidents held a substantive, sympathetic conversation about the U.S.-China meeting, Korea‑U.S. issues and peace on the peninsula, and they discussed the smooth implementation of the Joint Fact Sheet (JFS).At South Korea’s request, the call began at 10 p.m. and lasted about 30 minutes. Senior presidential spokesperson Kang Yoo‑jung said in a written briefing that President Lee congratulated President Trump on his successful state visit to China—the first in nine years—and commended the stable management of U.S.-China ties as contributing to peace and prosperity across the Indo‑Pacific and beyond.Kang said President Trump reviewed the outcomes of the U.S.-China summit, touching on overall bilateral relations, economic and trade agreements, and developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East. President Lee welcomed the constructive consultations between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on peninsula issues. President Trump pledged to continue supporting peace and stability on the peninsula, grounded in close Korea‑U.S. coordination.Kang added that the leaders recalled last year’s JFS as a historic agreement that upgraded the Korea‑U.S. alliance and agreed to work toward its faithful implementation. President Lee also praised President Trump’s active leadership on Middle East issues and expressed hope that peace and stability would be restored there soon. Both leaders expressed anticipation of meeting again at the G7 summit scheduled for mid‑next month.Observers noted the call’s timing was significant because it coincided with concrete moves on Korean investment in the United States. After President Lee recently raised the need for a Korea‑U.S. currency swap during talks with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the leaders may also have discussed potential U.S. reciprocal measures related to Korean investment. The call followed recent tensions around the Strait of Hormuz; the two countries are reported to have discussed ways to strengthen practical cooperation while upholding freedom of navigation.
