People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin questioned the outcomes and the rationale behind Representative Jang Dong-hyuk’s eight-night, 10-day trip to the United States, suggesting the delegation may have been misled by political brokers.
On the 27th, Bae appeared on SBS Radio’s “Kim Tae-hyun’s Political Show” and said she suspected that “Representative Jang and senior party officials like Kim may have been taken to the U.S. by so‑called brokers or lobbyists—basically unscrupulous operators.”
She added that she had heard Kim Min-soo traveled to the U.S. after a Facebook friend shared a link about the trip.
She said the event was the kind of thing any member of the American public could attend as a spectator. “Former Mayor Hong was very upset and said he watched Trump’s inauguration from his hotel room,” she said, adding that that visit, too, stemmed from being misled by brokers.
Bae also raised concerns about the cost of the trip. “From my experience in party posts, I estimate spending may have been in units of 100 million KRW (approximately 75,000 USD),” she said, calling the matter “worthy of a party audit.”
Finally, she said Jang has an obligation to report concretely to party members and the public on any results he achieved. “Instead, he offers an unconvincing explanation—everything is secret and classified, yet I met people beyond that,” she said.
