Party leadership says a serious problem has emerged
Recommends strong measures, including disqualifying the candidate

The Democratic Party of Korea recommended that its internal election management committee disqualify Park Seong-hyun, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province. Allegations have emerged that Park’s campaign paid workers and conducted an illegal phone-banking operation.
On April 5, the party said in a press release that its top committee had determined MBC’s reporting raised serious questions about Park’s eligibility.
Earlier, MBC reported that the Gwangyang City election commission had filed a complaint with prosecutors against the candidate and 15 campaign workers, alleging that an unregistered campaign office paid workers and ran an illegal phone campaign. Park denied involvement, saying a distant relative acted independently.
Party leaders said they would pursue strong disciplinary action in response to the allegations.
The party emphasized that it had urged the South Jeolla provincial election committee to take forceful measures, including stripping the candidate of his primary status.
