On the 1st, the Democratic Party expelled Kim Gwan‑young, the governor of North Jeolla Province, over allegations that he distributed cash envelopes. The expulsion stripped Kim, who was seeking re‑election, of his candidacy.
The party held an emergency Supreme Council meeting that day and voted to expel Kim.
Chief spokesperson Kang Jun‑hyun said, “We uncovered indications that he provided money,” and added that the Supreme Council members voted unanimously to expel him.
Earlier that morning, party leader Jeong Cheong‑rae ordered the party’s ethics inspection unit to launch an emergency probe into Kim. The move came after police received a complaint the previous day alleging Kim handed out cash envelopes to young people at a restaurant and opened an investigation.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s primary for the North Jeolla governorship had been a three‑way contest between Kim and lawmakers Ahn Ho‑young and Lee Won‑taek. With Kim expelled, the primary is expected to proceed between the two remaining candidates.
