Kim Seok-gi, a mayoral candidate in Changwon, has formally pledged to secure the NC Dinos as a permanent fixture in the city, elevating the team’s home-base issue into a central campaign plank.
At his sixth policy briefing, Kim said, “I will stop any attempt to move the team,” and argued the city must change from being merely chosen to becoming a place people have no reason to leave.
He identified three core strategies: develop a stay-oriented sports and retail district around NC Park; establish a medium- to long-term partnership between the club and the municipal government; and enact an ordinance to designate an official “NC Day.”
Kim proposed designating the date of the Dinos’ 2020 Korean Series championship as a commemorative day, institutionalizing the club as part of the city’s brand.
He also announced plans to refurbish Masan Baseball Stadium and expand youth baseball infrastructure to embed the sport in the region’s cultural life.
“I will build a revenue-based model rather than one reliant on subsidies, creating a system in which the city and the club can grow together,” Kim said.
Separately, the Masan High School alumni association has been reported to authorities on suspicion of violating election law after sending text messages that supported a specific candidate.
According to the complaint filed with the Gyeongnam Police Agency on the 31st, the alumni group sent organization-branded text messages on March 25 and March 31 urging recipients to support Kim Seok-gi.
The complainant says the messages contravene Article 87 of the Public Official Election Act, which prohibits organizations from engaging in electioneering. They also requested a search and seizure, warning that system logs and recipient lists used in the mass textings could be destroyed.
Police said they will examine the complaint and related materials before deciding whether to open a formal investigation.
