Ex-Democratic Lawmaker Receives Honorary 7th Dan in Taekwondo: What It Means for Her Political Future

Jeon Hyun-hee, a Democratic Party lawmaker and candidate in Seoul’s mayoral race on June 3, said on the 27th that she had been awarded an honorary 7th-degree Taekwondo certificate, calling it “a true honor and a source of pride.”

On her Facebook page the same day, Jeon noted that the promotion comes exactly 10 years after she received an honorary 5th-degree Taekwondo rank in 2015.

She wrote that a decade ago she worked with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and the broader Taekwondo community to help keep the sport on the Olympic program when it faced potential removal; for that contribution she was awarded the honorary 5th-degree certificate.

She added that receiving the honorary 7th-degree certificate from Yoon Woong-seok, president of Kukkiwon, felt particularly meaningful because it acknowledged her role in supporting Taekwondo’s joint application for inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Jeon pledged to continue promoting and protecting Taekwondo’s traditions and values.

Separately, following the party’s preliminary on the 24th, Jeon was confirmed as one of the three candidates advancing to the main primary, alongside Rep. Park Joo-min and former Seongdong District Mayor Jeong Won-o.
