Unification Minister Jeong Dong-young met with Dutch Foreign Minister David van Beek, who is visiting South Korea, today (February 10). The two officials discussed the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Unification, Minister Jeong explained the South Korean government’s “Peaceful Coexistence Policy” for the Korean Peninsula and urged the Netherlands to play a supportive role.

Minister Jeong introduced the government’s goal for this year, declaring it the “Year of Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.” He emphasized that resuming dialogue and cooperation between North and South Korea would ultimately contribute to peace and security in Europe as well. The minister requested cooperation from the European Union (EU) and the Netherlands in this endeavor.

Foreign Minister van Beek commended the South Korean government’s consistent policy direction aimed at advancing peace on the Korean Peninsula and expressed strong support for these efforts.

The Ministry of Unification reported that Minister van Beek particularly noted how the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine demonstrate the close interconnection between the security of both regions. This observation underscored the need for strategic cooperation between their countries.

Both ministers agreed to maintain close communication to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the broader region.
