The CIO announced on February 10 that it is currently analyzing seized materials related to allegations of a biased investigation into the connections between the Unification Church and the special prosecutor’s team headed by Kim Keon Hee.
During a regular press briefing at the Government Complex in Gwacheon, a CIO spokesperson stated that they are following standard investigative procedures in their probe into allegations of a cover-up in the Unification Church investigation.
The CIO’s fourth investigation division, led by Chief Prosecutor Cha Jung Hyun, executed search warrants at the special prosecutor’s office on December 26 and January 23.
The searches reportedly encompassed mobile phones belonging to the special prosecutors and their aides, as well as electronic devices used by the team investigating the Unification Church allegations.
The special prosecutor’s team had previously questioned Yoon Young Ho, the former world headquarters director often referred to as the Unification Church’s “number two.” During this investigation, they uncovered potential bribery allegations involving members of the ruling party, including Democratic Party lawmaker Jeon Jae Soo. However, as the case fell outside their jurisdictional purview under the special prosecutor law, they transferred it to the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency just before their investigative period concluded. This transfer sparked accusations of a biased investigation.
