Controversial Assault Case: What Led to the 1 Million Won Fine for Korean Politician Choi Won-sik?

▲ A court has fined Choi Won-sik, the head of the People Power Party’s Incheon Gyeyang-gap district committee, for assaulting a journalist.
Judge Moon Jong-cheol of the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Division 7 imposed a fine of 1 million KRW (approximately $750) on Choi, who was indicted for assault without detention.
Choi was charged with hitting a reporter, identified as A, during a dinner with journalists at a restaurant in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, in January last year.
According to reports, Choi made controversial comments about regional stereotypes and struck A on the back of the head when the reporter attempted to intervene.
The prosecution initially sought a summary order with a fine of 1 million KRW (approximately $750), but Choi later requested a formal trial.
