Toyota has officially named its first-ever three-row electric SUV the Highlander EV, marking a significant milestone for the brand.
According to a teaser image released by InsideEV on February 9, the Highlander EV will feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The exterior design closely resembles the bZ large SUV concept unveiled in 2021, representing a radical departure from the traditional Highlander’s styling.
This move reflects Toyota’s recent shift away from the artificial naming conventions used for models like the bZ4X. Instead, the automaker is leveraging familiar model names for its electric lineup, with the Highlander EV serving as a flagship example of this new strategy.
The teaser reveals several key design elements, including the model name prominently displayed on the tailgate and a distinctive double wraparound rear light bar. Some interior details are also visible. Overall, the Highlander EV appears to sport a more athletic, forward-looking design with a coupe-like silhouette, setting it apart from its gas-powered counterpart.
While Toyota has yet to disclose full powertrain specifications, industry experts anticipate that the Highlander EV will house a larger battery pack than the 74.7 kWh unit found in the bZ4X. The expected EPA-rated range is approximately 300 miles (about 483 km). There’s also speculation about the potential use of next-generation battery technology, offering improved energy density and faster charging capabilities.
It’s worth noting that Toyota is developing advanced battery technology aimed at achieving a maximum range of 620 miles (997 km) on a single charge. However, it remains to be seen whether the Highlander EV will incorporate this cutting-edge technology at launch.
In a related development, Lexus is reportedly working on a luxury variant of the Highlander EV, likely to be badged as the TZ. Both models are expected to compete head-to-head with upcoming electric SUVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Cadillac Vistiq.
Industry analysts view the Highlander EV’s debut as a clear signal of Toyota’s commitment to the electric vehicle market. If competitively priced, experts believe the model has strong potential to make a significant impact in the burgeoning large electric SUV segment.
