Rivian has kicked off final validation tests for its R2 electric SUV, ramping up for mass production as it prepares for the vehicle’s launch in the first half of this year.
On February 9th, electric vehicle news site Electrek reported that Rivian is putting the R2 through its paces in extreme conditions. The rigorous testing includes exposure to intense heat and cold, sandy environments, water fording, and towing capacity evaluations. Some R2 models, sporting wrap instead of camouflage, have been spotted on California roads.
The R2 is Rivian’s mid-size SUV offering, designed to be more compact and affordable than its flagship R1S model. With a starting price of around 45,000 USD (approximately 60 million KRW), it significantly undercuts the R1T pickup’s 73,000 USD (approximately 97.3 million KRW) base price. This strategic pricing positions the R2 as Rivian’s play for the mass-market EV segment.
Rivian has subjected the R2 to a wide range of temperatures, from a frigid -45°F to a scorching 122°F. Social media posts have revealed the vehicle charging at an Alaskan Supercharger station and cruising through California. The R2 will come equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, aligning with the industry’s evolving charging infrastructure.
Built on a new platform unveiled in 2023, the R2 is pivotal to Rivian’s mass-market strategy. In a move to accelerate its timeline, Rivian has opted to produce the R2 at its Illinois plant rather than the planned Georgia facility. Given the current pace of testing, industry observers expect the R2 to hit the market on schedule, marking a significant milestone in Rivian’s expansion plans.
