Hanwha to join development of AReS first-stage solid rocket motor
Targeting a 2027 demonstration; expanding U.S. defense cooperation
Hanwha Aerospace is expanding its missile motor development capabilities into the U.S. market through a new partnership with Northrop Grumman.
On April 21, at the Sea-Air-Space 2026 exhibition in National Harbor, Maryland, Hanwha Aerospace signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Northrop Grumman to co-develop the first-stage solid-fuel motor for the AReS (Advanced Reactive Strike) missile system.
AReS is a long-range, ground-launched strike system under development at Northrop Grumman that requires advanced propulsion performance to support rapid maneuverability and prompt launch sequences.
Under the agreement, Hanwha will join the AReS first-stage motor program from its initial development phase. The company says it will leverage global production capacity and advanced manufacturing technologies to accelerate both development and production timelines.
The joint program aims to conduct a demonstration in 2027.
A Hanwha Aerospace representative said a resilient defense industrial base is central to deterrence in a rapidly changing security environment, and that the partnership will strengthen the firm’s technology and manufacturing foothold in the U.S. defense market.
A Northrop Grumman representative said developing innovative, cost-effective weapon systems is critical amid evolving threats, and that the company will work with Hanwha Aerospace to deliver competitive solutions.
