Discussing U.S. investment, production and technology cooperation plans
Three Hanwha defense firms hosted a senior U.S. defense delegation to discuss ways to deepen U.S.–South Korea defense cooperation.
Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean said on the 7th that they invited former U.S. Indo‑Pacific Command commander Harry Harris and a delegation of recently assigned U.S. flag officers to their headquarters for a U.S.–South Korea defense cooperation roundtable.
About 20 people attended the meeting, held the previous day at the Hanwha Building in Janggyo‑dong, Seoul. The delegation included Harris, newly assigned senior officers from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, and senior officials from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
Representing Hanwha were Hanwha Aerospace CEO Suh Wook and senior executives from Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean.
Hanwha’s defense leadership outlined the company’s global business footprint and strategic vision, and highlighted key weapons‑system capabilities. They also presented areas for cooperation that could strengthen the U.S.–South Korea alliance across land, air and maritime domains.
U.S. participants expressed keen interest in Hanwha’s defense capabilities. Both sides agreed that Hanwha’s role in the defense industry is becoming a central pillar of the alliance and proceeded to discuss concrete avenues for future collaboration.
Harris is a prominent figure in Indo‑Pacific security. He previously served as commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and head of U.S. Indo‑Pacific Command, and was U.S. ambassador to South Korea from 2018 to 2021. He currently serves as a senior fellow at the National Defense University and as honorary chairman of the U.S.–Korea Chamber of Commerce.
A Hanwha Aerospace official said, \”The U.S.–South Korea alliance is the foundation of our defense business. Through investment, production and technology cooperation in the United States, we aim to build a model in which both countries’ defense industries grow together.\”
The official added, \”We will use this meeting to reinforce trust between senior leaders on both sides and to actively identify specific areas for cooperation.\”
