North Korea said it test-fired a new lightweight, multipurpose missile launch system and a multiple‑launch tactical cruise missile weapon system.
On the 27th, KCNA reported that the country’s defense science research institute conducted a major weapons firing test the previous day with Chairman Kim Jong Un observing.
During the trial, North Korean officials assessed the warhead effectiveness of a tactical ballistic missile’s “special mission” payload, tested the reliability of an ultra-precision autonomous guidance and navigation system for a range‑extended 240㎜ (about 9.45 in) guided rocket projectile, and evaluated the AI-guided terminal accuracy of a tactical cruise missile.
KCNA said the tactical cruise missile is slated for deployment to long‑range artillery brigades along the southern border and quoted Kim as giving a positive appraisal of the system’s military value.
Kim said important, high‑difficulty defense science technologies had been introduced into practical weapons testing and expressed strong satisfaction with the results.
The agency asserted the tactical cruise projectile pairs an ultra‑precision autonomous navigation suite with terrain‑contour‑matching navigation, adds an AI terminal‑guidance capability, and uses a combined glide-and-thrust flight profile to strike targets at ranges of about 100㎞ (roughly 62.1 miles) with high precision.
Kim described the tests as a clear signal of the renewal of the country’s military strength and a major technical advance toward strengthening the armed forces’ combat capability. He said the fire‑control and automation systems on all launch vehicles have been fully modernized to meet the requirements of modern warfare, improving their operational suitability.
He added that the current security environment accelerates ongoing military modernization, and that building the most modern and most powerful artillery force—one unmatched by any adversary—remains the top priority in force construction.
Kim also warned that giving the military destructive power so overwhelming that an opposing force’s survival would be theoretically impossible is an essential operational requirement. He said such capability would instill extreme anxiety and fear in an enemy and serve as a critical, responsible element of deterrence.
Earlier, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said they detected multiple projectiles, including short‑range ballistic missiles, launched into the Yellow Sea from the Jeongju area of North Pyongan Province the previous day.
Military authorities said the short‑range ballistic missile traveled about 80㎞ (roughly 49.7 miles), and they assessed that the launch also included rockets fired from a multiple‑rocket launcher.
The launch was North Korea’s first ballistic missile firing in 37 days since the 19th of last month and its eighth so far this year.
