Israel said on May 27 (local time) that it killed Mohamed Ode, the newly appointed leader of Hamas’s military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, in the Gaza Strip. His predecessor had been killed just 11 days earlier.
According to Reuters and other outlets, Defense Minister Katz posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “the commander of Hamas’s armed wing in the Gaza Strip was removed yesterday and sent to join his comrades in the depths of hell.” The Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet intelligence service also officially confirmed Ode was eliminated in airstrikes in northern Gaza.
Katz lauded the “brilliant” execution of the operation by the IDF and Shin Bet, saying, “We pledged to eliminate everyone who led the October 7 massacre, and that is what we will do. Wherever they are, they are doomed to meet death.”
The Israeli government said it launched airstrikes on the night of the 26th in the Rimal neighborhood in western Gaza City with the objective of targeting Ode, though officials did not explicitly confirm the outcome. Palestinian hospital sources reported the strikes occurred at least twice, killing at least three people and wounding 20.
Israeli officials said Ode was killed along with his wife and sons. Based on intelligence that tracked Ode and his associates’ movements for months, the military struck multiple buildings in Gaza City that had been used as hideouts. Hamas has not issued a statement.
The strikes on the 26th came on the eve of the Islamic holiday Eid al-Adha. Ode’s predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, was killed by an Israeli targeted strike on the 15th.
