The United States has partially restricted the sharing of satellite intelligence on North Korea, but a South Korean government official said on the 28th that the limits have not materially degraded Seoul’s surveillance posture. The unnamed official told reporters that, while Washington has curtailed some of the data it previously provided, Seoul is compensating by making fuller use of its own satellite assets to sustain reconnaissance and surveillance missions without interruption.Military Reconnaissance Satellite No. 5, launched last November, has completed its final combat-suitability assessment and is set to be commissioned by the end of this month, the official said.He stressed that the broader constellation remains robust: new satellites are being added to the existing national and reconnaissance platforms, allowing northward surveillance and monitoring to continue normally.Defense Ministry spokesperson Jeong Bit-na posted on social media that the satellite met all criteria in operational test and evaluation, enabling the Defense Ministry to bring it into service about two months ahead of schedule. Once operational, No. 5 will operate in a clustered formation with satellites 1–4 to monitor for signs of North Korean nuclear and missile activity and to perform reconnaissance of strategic, deep-area targets.Arirang-7, launched in December and demonstrated to provide imaging resolution finer than 30 centimeters, is currently in initial operational phases at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and is expected to enter full operational service around July.#U.S. #Restrictions_on_NorthKorea_Intel_Sharing #Military_Reconnaissance_Satellites #NorthKoreaYonhap News TV inquiries and tips: KakaoTalk/Line jebo23; Ji Seong-rim (yoonik@yna.co.kr)
