On May 4, officials said an unexplained explosion aboard an HMM bulk carrier trapped in the Strait of Hormuz sparked a fire.
HMM reported that crew members heard a loud “thud” and an unexplained blast, and they are battling the blaze aboard the vessel.
The company said the explosion occurred on the port side of the engine room.
No injuries were reported. The ship had 24 people on board, including six South Korean crew members.
HMM officials, however, were cautious about government intelligence suggesting a South Korean ship had been struck in the Strait of Hormuz.
An HMM representative said there is no confirmation of an external attack and that the crew do not know the cause, so it would be premature to classify the incident as a strike.
The fire had not been fully contained.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said in an emergency notice that a ship anchored outside the approach to Umm al-Quwain port in the Strait of Hormuz was likely struck at about 8:40 p.m.
