[Anchor] Iran appears to be using the cease-fire to accelerate reconstruction of its military and defense industry, U.S. and allied intelligence officials say. Analysts also warn Tehran may be moving to lock in control of the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has warned that any attempt by Iran to impose tolls on passage through the strait would make diplomatic solutions impossible. I’m Lee Ji-yoon. [Reporter] During the cease-fire, Iran has stepped up efforts to rebuild its armed forces and defense sector. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf / Speaker of Iran’s Parliament (local time May 20): I tell the nation to be reassured. The Iranian armed forces have used the cease-fire period to the fullest to rebuild our military strength. U.S. intelligence agencies report Iran has partly resumed drone production and is rapidly repairing missile bases that were destroyed during the war. They estimate Iran could fully restore its drone capabilities within six months. Analysts also say Tehran appears intent on cementing control over the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. think tank Institute for the Study of War reports Tehran is attempting to control transit by pressuring countries that want to pass through the strait to sign bilateral agreements. Iraq and Pakistan recently signed such accords with Iran, while the United Arab Emirates dismissed Tehran’s bid to control the waterway as a fantasy. The U.S. has made clear it will not allow Iran to impose tolls on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Marco Rubio / U.S. Secretary of State (local time May 21): If Iran pushes to collect tolls for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, diplomatic agreement will become impossible. It would be a threat to the world and illegal. Meanwhile, the U.S. imposed sanctions on nine individuals, including Lebanese lawmakers and others who have supported the Iran-aligned militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon. The sanctions list also included an Iranian diplomat who remained in Lebanon despite an expulsion order. This is Lee Ji-yoon of Yonhap News TV.
