How the Iran War is Shaping South Korea’s AI and Drone Defense Strategies

송언석Song Eon-seok, floor leader of the People Power Party, said the paradigm of warfare is being fundamentally reshaped around data, algorithms and unmanned systems. He called for a clear-eyed review of whether South Korea has a hardened defense posture to meet new asymmetric threats and whether the armed forces are fully prepared to advance as an AI-driven science and technology military.

Song delivered the remarks in a written address on May 20 at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul. The event — titled “Questions Raised by the Iran War: Are Our Drones and AI Ready?” — was co-hosted by Donghaeng Media Era and Rep. Yoo Yong-won of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly’s Defense Committee.

The session was a follow-up deliberation to the Era Forum convened on April 16 under the theme “The New Age of War: The Present and Future of K-Defense.” At that forum, participants discussed establishing a defense startup investment firm backed by the Defense Ministry and the National Intelligence Service; preparing industrial technologies from semiconductors, automobiles and shipbuilding for military applications; expanding mass-production facilities for drones and robots; reforming defense procurement systems; and the need to open military data.

Song said the recent Iran conflict has jolted military experts worldwide. He noted that while 20th-century warfare centered on large, capital-intensive weapons systems, the Iran war highlighted a shift toward low-cost, high-efficiency swarming drone attacks and the AI capabilities that precisely control them.

He urged a sober assessment of whether South Korea’s defense architecture can counter these new asymmetric threats and whether the military is positioned to become an AI-led scientific and technological force.

Song described the forum as meaningful for taking stock of the current state of South Korea’s defense system and for debating policy directions and institutional fixes to strengthen drone and AI capabilities.

He said the expertise of the participating specialists will provide a solid foundation as South Korea moves toward becoming a security power rooted in advanced technology, and he expressed hope the discussions will help shape the military’s future security strategy and produce practical, effective defense policy options.
