Hanwha Aerospace Partners with Milrem Robotics for Cutting-Edge UGV Development in Europe

Hanwha Aerospace announced on May 15 that it will partner with European unmanned-systems specialist Milrem Robotics on an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) program for Romania.

The agreement is intended to broaden Hanwha’s European portfolio beyond traditional firepower systems and into unmanned platforms.

The parties signed the deal May 14 at the BSDA 2026 defense exhibition in Bucharest, Romania.

Representatives from Hanwha Aerospace, Milrem Robotics and Hanwha Aerospace Romania (HARO) attended the signing. 

Hanwha said demand for multipurpose unmanned systems is rising among European and NATO members, and that Romania is moving forward with plans to acquire next‑generation UGVs.

The companies plan to leverage their existing platforms as the basis for collaboration.

Hanwha Aerospace will contribute its wheeled UGVs — Arion‑SMET and GRUNT — while Milrem Robotics brings the tracked THeMIS platform, which has proven its mobility and mission‑equipment integration in operational settings. 

The two firms are now jointly developing a larger tracked UGV. 

Ahead of the formal contract, they demonstrated manned‑unmanned teaming (MUM‑T) in Romania using the GRUNT and THeMIS systems.

Hanwha plans to establish local production and supply chains in Romania and to expand its unmanned‑systems business across the European market.
