The Army said May 7 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Samsung Electronics May 6 at the Gyeryongdae military complex in South Chungcheong Province to expand exchanges in advanced science and technology and accelerate its digital transformation.
The MOU aims to adapt Samsung’s advanced technologies to military operational environments and establish concrete cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), next‑generation networks (5G/6G), and mobile security. The agreement also paves the way for the Army to consider adopting the Samsung Galaxy Tactical Edition phones, which U.S. and German NATO forces use for battlefield situational awareness.
The two sides identified priority collaboration areas: developing AI‑enabled mobile systems, building next‑generation network infrastructure, and implementing mobile security platforms. They agreed to hold regular technical exchanges to refine military applications and chart future development paths.
Under the agreement, the Army will work with Samsung to modernize its digital combat environment by building 5G‑ and 6G‑based mobile operational systems, improving soldiers’ situational awareness through secure smartphones, and developing intelligent decision‑support capabilities.
About 25 officials attended the signing ceremony, including Maj. Gen. Ryu Seung‑ha, chief of the Army Headquarters’ Informatization Planning Staff, and Park Jung‑min, vice president and head of Samsung Electronics’ MX Division Global Mobile B2B team.
The Army said it will center efforts on Army TIGER+ and intelligent smart units, collaborating with Samsung to: △ build 5G‑based mobile operational environments; △ enhance soldiers’ situational awareness using smartphones equipped with advanced security technologies; and △ establish intelligent decision‑support systems to advance its digital combat capabilities.
Maj. Gen. Ryu called the MOU “an important starting point for applying cutting‑edge civilian technologies to future battlefield environments,” and said the Army will continue closely aligning leading commercial technologies with operational needs as it pursues transformation into an advanced science‑and‑technology force.
