The government says it received intelligence that a South Korean-flagged vessel anchored near the Strait of Hormuz was struck and is in the process of verifying the report.
On May 4, a government official said, “We are verifying information that a Korean vessel was struck.”
Around 8:40 p.m. that day, officials say an explosion occurred aboard a South Korean-flagged cargo ship anchored outside the Umm al-Quwain port limits in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel had 24 people on board — six South Korean crew members and 18 foreign crew members. So far, authorities report no casualties.
A government official said authorities have been informed there are no casualties and that they are working to verify the exact facts.
The Blue House is monitoring the situation closely. A Blue House official confirmed no South Korean crew members were injured and said investigators are probing the cause of the fire aboard the ship.
The National Security Office is coordinating responses with the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries as officials work to establish a clear picture of the incident. The National Security Council has not been convened.
Separately, the U.S. on the same day launched “Project Freedom,” deploying aircraft and warships to escort civilian vessels trapped in the Gulf (Persian Gulf) so they can transit the Strait of Hormuz.
