How the Iran War Revealed U.S. Military Weaknesses: Insights from China, Russia, and North Korea

Analysts say the Iran war provided rival countries with a real-time opportunity to assess U.S. military power. They argue it allowed observers to measure how the U.S. would perform against major adversaries and where its limits lie. Those conducting the assessment include any state that views the U.S. as an adversary and believes it could respond militarily—not just Washington’s rivals in name.

The Wall Street Journal reported on May 1 that China, Russia and North Korea have been studying U.S. forces through the lens of the Iran conflict. According to the report, those governments monitored new U.S. systems—such as AI-enabled precision strikes—and closely tracked the pace at which the U.S. is depleting missile stocks.

Another international takeaway was the effectiveness of low-cost weapon systems. Iran’s inexpensive attack drones, for example, challenged U.S. air defenses once considered nearly impenetrable. Jordan and the United Arab Emirates reported incidents in which Iranian drones damaged THAAD radar installations.

Observers saw those developments as exposing clear U.S. vulnerabilities. Critics say the U.S. expended large quantities of high-value munitions—Tomahawk cruise missiles and Patriot interceptors among them—over a short period, revealing limits in logistical resupply. Some analysts estimate it could take up to six years to fully replenish both offensive and defensive missile inventories.

The WSJ also warned the Iran war could harden North Korea’s views on nuclear weapons, reinforcing perceptions of their necessity. At a congressional hearing, U.S. “secretary of war” Pete Hegseth responded to Democratic lawmakers who questioned the campaign’s legitimacy by saying that North Korea would view the conflict as a lesson.
