US Aircraft Carrier George H.W. Bush Joins Operation Epic Fury: What This Means for Iran Relations

With the truce between the U.S. and Iran extended, a third U.S. aircraft carrier has moved closer to the Middle East. Washington is pressing for a second round of ceasefire talks while also reinforcing forces to prepare for the possibility of renewed clashes with Iran. 

On April 23 (local time), CNN reported that photos posted on the Pentagon’s website show the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush has been in the Indian Ocean since April 21.

That deployment will soon provide the Navy with dozens of additional aircraft it could employ if the truce with Iran collapses or if U.S. forces move to blockade Iranian ports. The Pentagon did not disclose the Bush’s exact position in the Indian Ocean.

One caption on the Pentagon’s site also notes the Bush was in the Indian Ocean on April 17. The carrier departed Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, on the 31st of last month and transited near South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope on the 17th, officials said.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is already operating in the Indian Ocean, and the USS Gerald R. Ford is operating in the Red Sea. The U.S. Navy has 11 carriers in total, but maintenance and training cycles typically leave only four deployable at a given time, CNN said. With the Bush joining them, three of those four available carriers would be committed to a conflict with Iran.
