On As the global aerospace and defense market expands rapidly, paint manufacturers are accelerating their response. Functional coatings can directly affect how advanced weapons systems perform. With traditional building-material and industrial segments facing market saturation and volatile raw-material prices, companies are shifting investment into higher-value aerospace and defense coatings.

According to industry sources on the 20th, the Korean next-generation fighter KF-21 built by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) uses defense coatings from KCC(002380). The KF-21 is a domestically developed 4.5-generation supersonic fighter and a flagship example of South Korea’s push for defense-technology independence.

Modern weapons operate in harsh environments, so high-performance coatings matter. Fighters endure intense frictional heat during supersonic flight, plus ultraviolet radiation, rain and salt exposure. Exterior coatings therefore do more than provide a finish: they suppress corrosion, stabilize surface conditions and help preserve airframe life and flight performance.

- KCC, the domestic leader in defense coatings, is focusing on advanced formulations that boost heat resistance, corrosion protection and other mission-critical properties.

A KCC spokesperson said, “KCC develops aerospace coatings across the aircraft, from exterior airframe surfaces to fuel-tank interiors and key structural areas, to strengthen airframe protection. As we expand exports and respond to tighter environmental rules, waterborne defense coatings that cut volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions are emerging as a new trend. We are accelerating development and broader application of those technologies.”

Noroo Paint (090350) also moved into the functional-coatings market last April with a developed “stealth coating.” By engineering polymer microstructures and particle composition precisely, the coating can absorb up to 90% of incoming radar energy. Since 2023, Noroo has partnered strategically with Korean Air on a government-backed program called “Meta-structure stealth fusion technology for unmanned systems to counter advanced detection threats,” a project with a total budget of 44.1 billion KRW (about $33.1 million).

The market outlook is favorable as functional coatings expand beyond weapons platforms into space applications such as low-Earth-orbit satellites. Global researcher Persistence Market Research projects the functional coatings market will grow from about $573.2 billion in 2025 to roughly $603.6 billion in 2026 and reach about $954.9 billion by 2035. With defense coatings gaining traction, companies from adjacent industries are entering the sector. Materials developer KR Advanced Electronic Materials announced in February plans to pursue commercialization of military infrared-blocking coatings.

An industry source said, “As South Korea develops and exports advanced weapons systems in succession, K-defense is raising its profile in global markets. Defense coatings—an area that affects weapon-system performance—are poised to become a new growth axis for the paint industry.”
