U.S. and Israeli officials acknowledged that Iran shot down a U.S. military jet, CNN and The New York Times reported April 3 (local time).
Three U.S. officials told CNN that a U.S. military jet was shot down over Iranian airspace and that U.S. forces have launched search-and-rescue operations.
The New York Times cited anonymous U.S. and Israeli officials who confirmed the shootdown but said the condition of the crew remains unclear.
Earlier, the provincial broadcaster in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, which operates under Iran’s state television, reported that a U.S. pilot ejected from the crashing jet.
The broadcaster said whoever captures the pilots alive and turns them over to police will receive a substantial reward.
The White House and U.S. military have not yet issued official statements. If confirmed, it would be the first instance in a war with Iran of a U.S. military jet being shot down by enemy fire.
