Reports say an airstrike killed the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy who oversaw operations to control the Strait of Hormuz.
Local outlets, including the Times of Israel, reported that on the 26th (local time) an airstrike in the Bandar Abbas area of southern Iran killed IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri.
An Israeli government official said the strike on the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, which sits on the Strait of Hormuz, killed Tangsiri.
The official said Tangsiri had led efforts to block and control the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for global energy shipments.
Neither the Israeli military nor Iran’s armed forces have issued an official statement about the strike.
Analysts say Tangsiri, a brigadier general who took command of the IRGC Navy in 2018, focused on expanding the force’s maritime capabilities, including fast attack craft, naval mines, anti-ship missiles and unmanned surface vessels (drone boats).
