U.S. Central Command commander Brad Cooper accused Iran’s leadership of sheltering underground while deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, calling that behavior a sign of a desperate regime.
In an interview on the 22nd (local time) with Iran International, an opposition outlet, Cooper said, “The Iranian leadership is desperate. Over the past two weeks, they have intentionally attacked civilian targets more than 300 times.”
This was Cooper’s first media interview since the conflict began. He is the field commander overseeing the U.S. operation against Iran, dubbed “Grand Outrage.”
Cooper said U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran are either ahead of schedule or progressing as planned.
He said the campaign is focused on Iran’s missile and drone production sites. “We are not just responding to today’s threats,” he said. “We are eliminating Iran’s future capabilities — including drones, missiles and even naval assets.”
Cooper also criticized Iran’s senior military leaders for sheltering in deep underground bunkers while frontline Iranian soldiers remain exposed to U.S. and Israeli airstrikes.
“Over the past week, I have observed a stark contrast between senior officers enjoying safety and protection in deep underground bunkers near Tehran and frontline soldiers dying on the battlefield without protection,” he said. “The surviving generals are protected; ordinary troops are effectively abandoned.”
He urged Iranian civilians to stay indoors, saying the Iranian military has launched missiles and drones from densely populated areas. “As President Donald Trump suggested, we will send a clear signal when it is safe to return to the streets,” he added.
