The U.S. Army has declared two warrant officers from the aviation unit, who perished during a training exercise, as casualties of duty.
On February 10, the Army convened a preliminary review board at Army Headquarters to assess the duty status of active-duty personnel. The board officially recognized the deaths of Warrant Officers Jeong Sang-geun and Jang Hee-seong as line-of-duty fatalities.
According to Army officials, the fallen soldiers will receive full military honors. The memorial service is scheduled for 8:30 AM on February 12 at the Armed Forces Capital Hospital, with the Army Chief of Staff presiding.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Kim Gyu-ha and Deputy Defense Minister Lee Doo-hee paid their respects at the funeral home in the Armed Forces Capital Hospital the previous day.
An Army spokesperson stated, “We will honor the noble sacrifice of our fallen comrades and extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We are committed to providing all necessary support and respect.”
The incident occurred at approximately 11:04 AM on February 9, when an AH-1S Cobra helicopter from an aviation unit crashed during emergency procedure training near Hyun-ri, Jojong-myeon, Gapyeong County. Both crew members, a warrant officer in his 50s serving as the pilot and another in his 30s as the co-pilot, were killed in the crash.
Emergency procedure training simulates unexpected situations, such as engine failure, teaching pilots how to respond by reducing engine power and implementing other critical measures.
While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, military officials noted that witness accounts and scene analysis suggest the two pilots fought to maintain control until the very end, likely in an effort to minimize potential casualties on the ground.
Following the incident, the Army has grounded all AH-1S Cobra helicopters. A 32-member central accident investigation committee, led by Acting Aviation Commander Brig. Gen. Park Min-sang, has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation of the crash site near the riverbank.
