In a recent phone call, President Lee Jae-myung and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed global security challenges and potential avenues for expanding South Korea-NATO cooperation.
Blue House spokesperson Kim Nam-jun reported today that the call, initiated by Secretary General Rutte, was the first conversation between the two leaders in seven months, following their initial discussion last July.
Both President Lee and Secretary General Rutte acknowledged the increasing interconnectedness of security in the Indo-Pacific and Europe. They agreed on the importance of sustained cooperation between South Korea and NATO in addressing global security challenges.
The leaders committed to maintaining close communication on critical issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the evolving situation on the Korean Peninsula.
President Lee highlighted South Korea’s position as an ideal defense partner for NATO member countries, citing the nation’s advanced defense industry capabilities. He proposed strengthening defense cooperation through mechanisms like the South Korea-NATO Defense Cooperation Council, established last year.
Secretary General Rutte responded positively, commending South Korea’s defense industry prowess and pledging continued support for enhanced South Korea-NATO defense collaboration.
According to spokesperson Kim, both parties agreed to pursue deeper South Korea-NATO relations across various sectors, including defense, space, and intelligence sharing.
