A civic organization was launched on February 10 to elevate the 1st Marine Division in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, to corps level.
The inaugural ceremony for the “Pohang Marine Corps Corps Formation and Civic Promotion Committee for the Semi-4th Army System” (tentative name) was held in the main conference room of Pohang City Hall.
Over 30 organizations participated in the event, including the Pohang Marine Veterans Association, which led the initiative, along with Pohang City, Pohang City Council, Pohang Chamber of Commerce, Pohang Development Advisory Association, and Pohang Roots Association.
The committee was formed to realize a “semi-4th military system” by upgrading the 1st Marine Division to corps level, granting the Marine Corps Commander authority equivalent to that of a 4th military branch.
The main objectives cited for this initiative were strengthening national security (through reorganization as an independent strategic maneuvering force) and boosting the local economy.
The committee projects that the corps upgrade would bring in over 10,000 troops and civilians, potentially becoming a new growth engine for Pohang, including the development of a K-defense industry hub.
They also anticipate discussions on plans to establish a Marine Academy in Pohang, linked to the integrated Army, Navy, and Air Force military academies.
The committee plans to hold a second forum in early March to adopt a joint declaration.
