Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has unveiled its KF-21 development roadmap at the World Defense Show 2026 (WDS) in Saudi Arabia, aiming to capture a share of the Middle Eastern defense market. Now in its third year, the WDS is the region’s largest defense exhibition and a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy for defense industry self-reliance.

KAI announced on the 10th that this year’s WDS will spotlight the KF-21, slated for deployment with the Republic of Korea Air Force. The company plans to showcase its technological prowess across aerospace and unmanned systems, featuring key platforms like the FA-50 and LAH, alongside small SAR satellites and UAVs.

The exhibition will also introduce a next-gen aerial combat system concept, integrating unmanned assets with the FA-50 and KF-21. A KAI spokesperson explained, “This system pairs a manned aircraft with multiple UAVs, reducing pilot workload and combat risks. We’re developing it into an AI-driven, autonomous platform capable of meeting future aerial warfare challenges.”

The WDS display emphasizes the KF-21’s superior performance, domestically produced components, and future upgrade potential. Domestic firms involved in the KF-21 program will jointly exhibit under the “Team Korea” banner.

Unlike its 4.5-generation competitors, the KF-21 stands out as a newly developed aircraft. Its modular design allows for phased capability enhancements, including potential unmanned teaming and stealth features, giving it a competitive edge.

KAI’s KT-1 and T-50 aircraft have already proven their versatility and high readiness rates in MENA nations like Iraq, Turkey, and Senegal. The Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) program scored its first international sale to Iraq, underscoring the region’s growing confidence in KAI products. This milestone contract for two KUH units, signed in 2024, marked Korea’s debut in the global military helicopter export market.

KAI aims to position itself as a strategic, long-term partner aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives. Expectations are high following a recent visit by the Saudi Air Force Commander to KAI’s Sacheon facility, where he observed a KF-21 demonstration flight and toured production lines. The commander expressed keen interest in KAI’s aviation platforms, MRO capabilities, and training systems.

KAI CEO Cha Jae-byeong stated, “Saudi Arabia shows strong interest not only in fighter jets but also in emerging sectors like satellites and UAVs. We’re committed to establishing ourselves as a key strategic partner in the Middle East while aggressively pursuing exports of our core products.”
