In a post on his X account, President Lee specifically mentioned Chief Warrant Officer Jung Sang-geun and Chief Warrant Officer Jang Hee-seong. He paid tribute to the noble sacrifice of the two soldiers who died while performing their duties in harsh conditions.

The President highlighted that both servicemembers held onto the controls until their final moments, commending their unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and safety of the nation. His remarks are viewed as recognition of the soldiers’ courageous choices during both the incident and their training.

President Lee also provided specific details about the crash site, noting that the helicopter went down just tens of meters from residential areas. He described the situation as potentially catastrophic, indicating that it could have resulted in greater civilian casualties under different circumstances.

Despite the gravity of the situation, he pointed out that the incident did not escalate into a major disaster, emphasizing that the soldiers’ actions ultimately safeguarded public safety. This statement underscores both the seriousness of the incident and the significance of their sacrifice.

The President stressed that the dedication of military personnel underpins the daily lives of citizens. He vowed to always remember that the nation’s peace is built upon the sacrifices of true soldiers. Acknowledging that the deceased were proud sons, husbands, and fathers, he extended his deepest condolences to their grieving families. While admitting the impossibility of fully comprehending their loss, he assured that the nation would fulfill its duty to honor and support the bereaved families.

The crash occurred around 1104 hours, roughly one hour after takeoff. At the time of the incident, two warrant officers, the pilot and co-pilot, were aboard the aircraft.

Both servicemembers were transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest immediately following the crash but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. The emergency procedure training is designed to enhance crew proficiency in handling unexpected situations, such as engine failure, during actual flights. The military is currently conducting a comprehensive review of the training parameters and the circumstances surrounding the accident. This incident has raised concerns about the need for a thorough examination of safety protocols and procedures in military aviation training.

The President’s message of condolence is interpreted as a clear indication of the nation’s commitment to honor the fallen soldiers. There is growing interest in how the investigation into the cause of the accident will unfold, as well as the measures to prevent future occurrences, support for the bereaved families, and the proper recognition of the soldiers’ sacrifice.
