Chungnam Province has joined forces with four major aerospace and defense companies—Korean Air, LIG Nex1, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and Hanwha Aerospace—to establish the Defense Future Aviation Research Center in Cheonsuman by 2032. This collaboration aims to create a pivotal hub for the future aviation industry.
On May 10th, Governor Kim Tae-heum signed a memorandum of understanding at the Taean Cultural Arts Center. The signing ceremony was attended by Congressman Seong Il-jong, Deputy Director Lee Jeong-seok of the Agency for Defense Development, and representatives from the four participating companies. The agreement focuses on fostering growth in the future aviation sector and stimulating investment.
The partnership seeks to develop a strategic center for the future aviation industry, leveraging the support infrastructure for companies associated with the Defense Future Aviation Research Center. This facility is slated for construction in Cheonsuman’s B district. The collaboration also aims to generate new regional growth drivers through mutual cooperation.
The agreement outlines several key focus areas: 1) developing research and corporate support infrastructure, including the Defense Future Aviation Research Center; 2) facilitating collaboration between central and local governments and private companies for smooth project execution; and 3) securing both public and private investment funding.
The four companies, led by Korean Air, plan to utilize the area surrounding the Defense Future Aviation Research Center as a hub for research, testing, and manufacturing in the future aviation sector. They will explore new facility investment opportunities to boost local job creation and advance the region’s industrial capabilities.
Chungnam Province will spearhead the development of a specialized industrial complex linked to the Defense Future Aviation Research Center. The local government will also focus on enhancing living conditions, including transportation infrastructure, and ensuring reliable water and power supplies to attract businesses. Additionally, the province will provide administrative and financial support for corporate investment activities.
The Agency for Defense Development has committed to rapidly establishing the necessary research infrastructure, including the Defense Future Aviation Research Center. They will also actively support related companies in establishing operations in the region.
Congressional representatives from Seosan and Taean have pledged to secure federal funding for the swift development of the Defense Future Aviation Research Center, specialized industrial complexes, and transportation infrastructure. They will also advocate for legislative and policy support to streamline regulations that may impede industrial growth and to update relevant laws.
Governor Kim Tae-heum stressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “To truly nurture the future aviation industry, we need to go beyond just establishing the Defense Future Aviation Research Center. We must create a cluster of major corporations and their partner companies in this sector.” He urged industry leaders like Korean Air, LIG Nex1, KAI, and Hanwha Aerospace to consider investing in Taean.
The Defense Future Aviation Research Center, set to be completed by 2032, represents an investment of 329.4 billion KRW (approximately 247.05 million USD). The facility, to be located in Cheonsuman’s B district, will feature key installations including a dedicated runway for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research and development, as well as a flight control center and hangar. Upon completion, the center will consolidate the nation’s scattered UAV R&D facilities into a comprehensive research and testing hub for aviation technologies.
