OpenAI will begin displaying ads in ChatGPT to users in South Korea who are on its free or low-cost plans.
On May 8, OpenAI said it will expand the ChatGPT ads pilot—currently running in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand—to five additional countries: South Korea, the U.K., Japan, Brazil and Mexico. The company said the rollout will take place over the coming weeks.
The pilot will target adult users on the free and Go tiers. Minors and subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans will be excluded.
OpenAI said ads will be clearly separated from ChatGPT’s responses and will not influence those answers. Advertisers will not have access to conversations or personal data; they will only see aggregated performance metrics such as impressions and clicks.
Ads will be marked as sponsored content. Users will be able to hide ads, submit feedback and manage ad personalization settings.
The company said the system is designed to avoid serving ads in conversations about sensitive or potentially regulated topics.
Dave Duggan, OpenAI’s head of Global Solutions, said, “OpenAI will prioritize user experience and trust, and will carefully manage the ad experience in each region.”
