Ted Turner, the media entrepreneur who founded CNN, the world’s premier 24-hour news cable network, has died at 87.
According to U.S. outlets including CNN, Turner died peacefully on the 6th (local time) with his family at his side. Born November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner founded CNN in 1980 as the world’s first 24-hour news channel and is widely credited with reshaping the global broadcast news industry.
He created the first cable “superstation,” enabling broadcasts to reach audiences nationwide, then went on to launch TNT, TCM and Cartoon Network, building a U.S. cable television empire. Mark Thompson, chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, said in a statement, “Ted was a passionate, devoted leader. He was brave and unafraid — he trusted his instincts and followed his judgment.”
Thompson added, “Ted was the moral anchor of CNN and he will remain so. We stand on the shoulders of a giant, and today we will take time to honor his life and the influence he had on the world.”
President Donald Trump mourned Turner’s passing, calling him a titan of broadcasting and “a friend who was there for me when I needed him.”
