The Broadcasting Media and Communications Review Committee (BMCR) announced it will accept applications for a production support program aimed at improving broadcast language and culture from May 4 through June 8.
Eligible projects should examine the state of broadcast language—new coinages, profanity, foreign loanwords—and propose ways to improve it. Program formats are left to the discretion of participating broadcasters.
A review panel will select one project to receive funding. The chosen work will receive 48.5 million KRW (including VAT, approximately US$36,375). The broadcaster must air the program by Oct. 31.
The BMCR will provide details on the program overview, eligibility, and funding-execution guidelines at an online briefing on May 20.
The BMCR said it hopes the initiative will foster a shared commitment among broadcasters and viewers to responsible on-air language use amid a growing proliferation of careless slang and vulgar expressions.
